Tattoo FAQs

Common questions about tattoos, bookings, pain, aftercare, and the tattoo process at Markings Tattoos in Hessle, East Yorkshire.

How Do I Book an Appointment / Get a Price Quote?

Complete the contact form and send your idea with reference images, size, placement details, and preferred availability. In-person consultations are available upon request.

How Much Does a Tattoo Cost?

The price of a tattoo is dependent on the size, detail of the design and the location on the body where it will be placed. Get in touch with your idea and we'll provide a personalised quote.

Do I Have to Pay a Deposit?

Yes, all appointments require a deposit. Deposits are confirmed at quotation, non-refundable, non-transferable, and deducted from the final cost of your tattoo.

How Can I Pay?

We accept cash, bank transfers, debit and all major credit cards except American Express. Cheques are not accepted.

What Happens If I Can't Attend My Appointment?

Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable. Please read our Terms and Conditions for full information. We require at least 48 hours notice to reschedule.

Do You Accept Walk-In Appointments?

Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis with cancellation availability permitting.

How Should I Prepare for My Tattoo Session?

Eat and stay hydrated before your appointment. Dress appropriately for placement. Avoid heavy drinking before and the night before, as alcohol thins blood, increases bleeding, lowers pain tolerance, and reduces healing ability. Inform staff about numbing cream use. Stay calm. See our full preparation guide for more details.

Can I See My Tattoo Design Before My Appointment?

Designs typically aren't shown until appointment day to protect work integrity and prevent theft. Small changes can occur on the day. Pre-drawn designs are available to view in-studio.

Do You Offer Cover-Ups or Re-Works?

Yes, but not every tattoo can be covered or re-worked. You will need to have a consultation with the artist to discuss your options. You should be flexible and willing to consider laser removal as cover ups are always a compromise.

Can I Bring a Friend?

One friend or family member may wait in the waiting area, though they may not sit beside you throughout the session.

How Old Do I Have to Be to Get a Tattoo?

Customers must be aged 18 years old or over before they can be tattooed. All customers will be asked to prove their age with a driving licence or passport if it is believed they are under the legal age.

Does It Hurt?

Yes! But in the best possible way. Your brain releases endorphins when you go through pain and your body loves endorphins, so yes, it hurts, but you'll kinda like it.

How Do I Care for My New Tattoo?

Proper aftercare is essential. See our full tattoo aftercare instructions for detailed day-by-day guidance.

How Long Does a Tattoo Take to Heal?

Healing usually takes 7 to 14 days, depending on the size of the tattoo, but it takes 3 to 4 months for the skin to fully regenerate.

Can I Go on Holiday with a Fresh Tattoo?

Avoid harsh sunlight including sunbathing or sunbeds/solariums. No massages, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, swimming in pools or the sea. Leave at least a month before summer holidays.

Will My Tattoo Idea Be Judged?

Definitely not! We do NOT discriminate or judge your ideas; each client is different and we respect all reasons for wanting each individual tattoo.

Is It Possible to Tattoo Over Scars?

Generally, we can tattoo over scarred or damaged skin, as long as it has healed fully. Please seek advice from your doctor or GP if you have severe scarring.

Do You Tattoo All Skin Colours/Tones?

Yes — all skin colours or tones can be tattooed.

I Think My Tattoo Needs a Touch Up?

Send a healed tattoo image for assessment. Most touch-ups are free when returning to the original artist within several months.

Can I Use Numbing Cream or Spray?

Talk to your artist beforehand, as some are not comfortable with it. It can make skin difficult to tattoo and affect healing. Pain often increases once cream wears off. If your artist approves, they'll recommend suitable creams and application methods.
